Summary: Informs families how to obtain an age verification document from the student's school.

State and Federal laws exist around employing minors. Information about Colorado youth labor laws can be obtained from the Colorado Department of Labor, including the Colorado Youth Employment Opportunity Act and a fact sheet.

Under the Colorado Youth Employment Opportunity Act, any minor fourteen or fifteen years of age who wishes to work on school days during school hours must secure a school release permit (sometimes referred to as a ‘work permit’). The Act also allows employers desiring proof of age of any minor employee (or prospective minor employee) to require the minor to submit an age certificate. Families must contact their student's Jeffco school to obtain one of the following responses:

Approach 1: Schools may respond to a request for a work permit or school release permit with a standard letter to the employer on Jeffco letterhead.

Approach 2: Schools may respond to a request for an age certificate with the Age Certificate form

  • School provides the student the Age Certificate Form
  • The student completes the top portion and signs it in the presence of the issuing school official
  • School official verifies the student data and completes the bottom portion

During summer break, families may contact the Student Records Center, 303-982-6715, for assistance.
